THE INTERVIEW CHAT
1.
Tell us as much as you can about
yourself.
I am Desh Subba, born in Dharan, Nepal. Since 1996, I have
been living in Hong with family. As a writer and philosopher, I have written
some novels, poems articles and books published by reputable local and
International publishers. The names of my main line books in English are
Philosophy of Fearism : Life is conducted, directed and controlled by fear
Philosophyof Fearism East-West Dialogue (coauthor R. Michael Fisher),
I am the propounder of Philosophy of
Fearism and founder “The Fearism Study Center Dharan Nepal”. I have been
working in development of Fearism since 1999.
2. How do
you see the reality of fear?
Fear is a universal truth. It is part of human consciousness. Among the four parts of the mind, the Amygdale part is only responsible
for fear. This part was first developed as part of the mind. An experiment was
carried out by some United States scientist in mouse with regards to fear. They
took out the Amygdale from the mouse through operation; it was recorded that
the mouse lost the sense of fear. This was evident because the mouse can now
freely go to the cat. But the walking steps of the mouse appeared like it was
drunk. This stands to prove that taking the bodily part of the fear-mind off man,
he becomes more or less like a consciousnessless being. Consciousness is not part
of five main constituent sense organs of the body. It is a combination of
multiple senses. That's why I normally say that, we don't have only five senses,
we have multiple senses. Consciousness is not enough to be afraid. Our
knowledge of fear depends on how the meaning was developed. Its meaning is important
to the fear. I tried explaining this in caricature of meaning way. We used to
caricature the meaning. When we caricature meaning, we caricature fear too. For
example when we learn the meaning of ghost, we learn to be afraid too. If we don’t
learn to be afraid of ghost then we would not fear ghost. Who used or created
the meaning of ghost at the first time, he/she used it according to situation,
event, environment, consciousness and conditional reflex etc. I described it in
my book (2014). When we see new thing(s) or word we never directly fear. It is
philosophically responsibility to attempt understanding it otherwise it will be
taken normal and factual.
The
Conditional Reflex Theory of Russian Psychologist Ivan Pavlov's which was
experimented on dog is a close and relevant example of my theory of meaning. I
am taking it as my source of fear too.
3.
Mention at most five writers that
influenced your line of thought and if possible, the central thesis of their
view.
Authors and philosophers read many books and develop some
new idea from it. These ideas also influence them. This is common place among
philosophers or writers. My case is accidently different. Firstly, I coined the
word "Philosophy of Fearism" and develop it. To develop it, I started
to read related books. Mostly I used to read those books which are helpful in
my philosophical writing and lecture. I read Nepalese version books because it
is difficult for me to read English directly. Nepalese author who have written
world literary theory, criticism and philosophy. I read many times book of Dr.
Sanjeev Upreti, name of his book is "Talking About Theory." It is
prepared for university text. But it is useful for me because what I required
as references were found therein. This book discusses the theory of modernism
and post modernism. I read the book of Dr. Govindraj Bhattarai's and many
criticism books. I laid my hand on the "Introduction of Philosophy"
written by Dr. Birendra Prasad Mishra which was useful too, "Outline of
world book" written by Rahul Sankrityayan, Marxist Philosophy by V.
Afanasyev etc. I read also some religious and spiritual books also I read. Currently,
I am working on "The Holy Bible".
4.
Mention (if you know any) at least
three fearologist or psychologist or sociologist you know who said something on
fear and succinctly state their central thesis.
I read a Fearologist book by the Nigerian author Osinakachi
Akuma Kalu "The First Stage of the
Fearologist". He looked at fear
from the Fearologist angle. He is the
first to write a book exclusively with the title Feaology. I studied the book "East and West Literary Theory" by of Prof. Mohan Raj Sharma
and Dr. Khagendra Luitel. In this book the views of many psychologists were
availed - Sigmund Freud, Jacque Marie Emile Lacan, Alfred Adler etc. Freud and
Lacan talked about castration. Frued ignored the importance of castration of
father and Lacan believed that castration is as a result of language. Building on
this backdrop, I think fear of father is most important thing here. Adler talks
about Inferiority complex. My point is inferiority complex is as a result of
fear. In sociology I studied Karl Marx, Michel Foucault and Antonio
Gramsci.
Karl
Marx focus is class struggle. My argument is that there is no class struggle in
society but fear struggle. Michel Foucault's Discipline and punishment is
concerned with fear. The Hegemony theory of Gramsci is also connected to power
and less power. Powerful person shows fear for the powerless person to take
advantage. These are my subject of research.
5.
Do you think that fear is relevant
to the society? If yes how relevant is it? If no why?
Yes fear is relevant to the society. If people have no fear
of the rules and regulations, police, court, punishment, how can the society
move forward? However, it must be used in a proper way. Misuse of fear invite problems
and right track usage avoids violence, rape, killing, corruption etc. Our
society, country, and family, school everywhere keep discipline as a result of
fear. If there is no fear, one cannot tell what the society would look like. In
my opinion fear is the best relevant tool to the society.
6.
How can you explain fear from your
own discipline?
In my own discipline, fear is a knowledge which derived from
meaning. That meaning is a caricature design. This type of discipline design
generates fear to us. This word, meaning is specially design to produce fear.
This is one of an active and protective consciousness. After generating fear in
our consciousness, our consciousness becomes active to manage it. Steps of
managing it may be multiple. Philosophers, authors and leaders undermine its
greatness and neglect it. In my discipline, fear is the central like sun in the
solar system other factors are planets and planetoids.
7.
How does fear affect the society man
finds him?
Invisibly fear is plays a major role in our society.
Creation, invention, construction, institution are in existence because of fear.
Knowingly or unknowingly fear is in the centre of life. If we remove fear from
our society, it will turn into life without breath. Just as breath is to life,
so is fear to human society. Many scholars, leaders, and writers did good
explicit and implicit work on fear especially when we dig inside their thought.
From already existing philosophical and scientific literatures we can find fear
like an electron, proton and neutron to the society. Fear has deep effect to
our life, society and country.
8.
Is it true that when one is afraid,
the spirit of fearlessness emerges also? How true is this statement?
It is like relation of disease and treatment. Without
sickness or disease one will never seek
for the doctor or medicine. When someone is afraid, then that person seeks
exit. This exit leads them towards invention, construction, development etc.
Concept and root of government and political philosophy was based on fear and
way to fearlessness.
9.
How best can humanity manage fear?
First
of all education. We must start good fear education. Under fear education it
will have many departments. Without good fear education humanity cannot manage
fear. Fear education would be the most require practical education in coming
days. We cannot ignore its importance. We need to look and take care of it in
accordance to the ways given by Philosophy of Fearism, Philosophy of
Fearlessness, Fearology and Philosophy of Fear. These concepts are very new
concept. The world is suffering from fear disease in present time. Before mow it
was not harmful as it is in the present day. Now it needs cure. The remedy is solely
fear education. Every individual need to know what fear is? What its role is in
our daily life? How the world is suffering as a result of fear and how the
world is to be cured from fear? To understand researches or thesis based work, there
should be scholars, critics, analyzers. To treat this increasing number of fear
patients we need separate cure centers, doctors and medicines. This is the best
way to manage fear.
- Do you think that philosophy of Fearism or fearology is going to be relevant to the humanity?
Yes
definitely Philosophy of Fearism or Fearology is only the relevant tool to cure
humanity from fear problems. Fearist authors are trying their best to propound
the best theory for the sake of humanity.
